Australia 2021/2022 Brochure Launch

Scenic unveils the new 2021/22 Australia Handcrafted Land Journeys Brochure Collection

8 September 2020

Scenic has unveiled its 2021/22 Endless Wonders of Australia brochure collection. Featuring two new regional brochures and 12 small group itineraries spanning the Northern Territory, Western Australia, South Australia, Tasmania and Norfolk Island. These brochures provide travel agents and their clients with a comprehensive guide to plan their holiday closer to home next year.

Proudly Australian founded, next year will mark Scenic’s 35-year anniversary of creating unforgettable, handcrafted journeys for their guests. With the 2021/2022 program being curated by the Scenic’s highly experienced local expert, Liz Crowley, Scenic Journey Designer Australia, New Zealand and Africa.

Liz Crowley said: “What I love about Scenic’s Australian land journeys are that many of our partners are small family run businesses, that we have been supporting for many years. They welcome our guests like long lost friends. We’ve reduced our group sizes to 24 in 2021/22 and we have also been able to expand our programs to support the local industry, in particular with destinations like Kangaroo Island, which were affected by the bushfires. It’s also been great to see such strong demand for our domestic program, with Earlybird offers and selected itineraries including the Kimberley region, likely to sell out.”

A new addition for 2021 is the 13-day Mystical Kimberley itinerary. A memorable highlight for guests will be a flight directly into Purnululu National Park for an overnight stay in the heart of the Bungle Bungles among the 300 million-year-old striped domes. This itinerary also features visits to Kakadu National Park, Katherine Gorge and the famed Gibb River Road with an overnight stay at Emma Gorge Resort in El Questro Wilderness Park.

The 8-day Gems of South Australia features a new Scenic Enrich experience at the biodynamic Gemtree Wines. These winemakers sustainably and organically grow and farm their grapes. The biodynamic methods entwine the health of the soil, vines and resident fauna and flora, resulting in exceptional fruit quality and wines of high purity. Guests will be taken through an interactive experience at the Biodynamic hut, where they will learn all about biodynamic viticulture then enjoy a tasting of locally sourced snacks.

The 9-day South Western Mosaic has been refreshed to include a stay at the new Westin Perth and a visit to Rottnest Island. A trip through the Jarrahdale State Forest to Kojonup is also included, where guests can explore the indigenous cultural centre of Kodja Place and walk through the beautiful Rose Maze. A walk among the giants of the ancient Karri and Jarrah forests, the vineyards of Margaret River and a visit to the most south-westerly tip of the country at Cape Leeuwin are included in this itinerary for travellers who love to explore the great outdoors of Western Australia.

Scenic’s 2021/22 Endless Wonders of Australia brochures are available now online and for orders by Travel Agents from TIFS from early October.

Visit www.scenic.com.au for full details on Scenic’s Earlybirds program, which offers savings of up to $1,000 per couple for new bookings made before 31 January 2021.

110 Bottles of Whisky on the Wall...Scenic Eclipse's Whisky Bar is a Star

06 November 2019

The whisky fanatic’s adage says, “every loaf of bread is a tragic story of grains that could've become beer or whisky but didn't…” No such issue exists at Scenic Eclipse’s whisky bar where 110 bottles of Uisge-beatha na h-Alba (Gaelic for whisky or “water of life”) are available for guests to sample and enjoy.

Located in the main lounge of the World’s First Discovery Yacht, the Whisky Bar is a favourite gathering place for many of the ship’s 228 guests. The floor to ceiling display case, backed by a wall of translucent quartz crystal, puts the ship’s 110 varieties of whisky on gorgeous display. The stock includes single malts such as a 25-year-old Glendullan, a 30-year-old Jura The Loch and a 16-year-old Lagavulin. Blended whiskies, include the most famous of super-premium blends, Johnny Walker Blue; Ireland’s Jameson Select Reserve Black Barrel; Canada’s Crown Royal Deluxe; and an array of examples from Australia, Japan, Taiwan, France, India, USA, South Africa and Sweden - all included as part of Scenic’s unique all-inclusive policy.

Guests gravitate to the bar to mingle and trade stories of their day’s experiences, including exploring on one of two Airbus helicopters or the on board the six-guest submarine; to enjoying discovery excursions via kayak, paddleboards and e-bikes; a treatment at the 550m2 Senses Spa, a Pilates class or work out in the well-equipped gym; listening to educational seminars given by Discovery Team; or coming back after taking in the local cultures and sights highlighted on one of many shore excursions.

Scenic’s industry-first policy of being truly all-inclusive on their river ships holds true on its first ocean vessel. The only additional charges are for personal spa treatments and services, helicopter and submarine excursions, and some very high-end wines on the Chairman’s Cellar List. Everything else – all drinks, meals, room service, butlers, transfers, gratuities, excursions and lectures are included.

An Installation Of Graffiti On Board Scenic Eclipse

15 October 2019

Scenic Luxury Cruises and Tours has unveiled three custom installations on board Scenic Eclipse by the famous British Graffiti Artist, Carl Hush.

The works were installed over a two-day period while Scenic Eclipse was in port in Rotterdam.

“His unique works are striking, an amalgamation of collage, graffiti, stencil, painting and drawing. He is known for using these mixed techniques to create his geisha inspired works. The collection on board Scenic Eclipse will be of his beautiful geisha ladies, featured most prominently in our stunning Koko’s restaurant”, said Karen Moroney, Project Director- Design, Scenic Group. “His work which focuses on the female from depicting their beauty and sensuality are created in traditional colours and modern graffiti style, which are the perfect complement to the warmth and subdued atmosphere of our ship design”, she said.

About the Artist
UK based artist Hush draws influence from graphic novels, animation and the evanescent quality of street art. Hush's mix of crazy anime inspired characters and pop-infused imagery creates a fascinating commentary on urban culture and has been described as Urban Abstract Pop.

Hush originally trained as a graphic designer and illustrator at Newcastle School of Art and Design for 5 years. His love of street art goes back to his youth, when he did a bit of graffiti in his formative years and made posters for rave/dance nights, "I've always been interested in how graffiti was being reintroduced and how it was influencing styles and fonts, but never really being accepted as its own art form".

Hush has worked throughout Asia, Europe and the USA. His interest and immersion in diverse cultures has informed his art which is recognizable for its cross-cultural influences. His central focus is the female form, in particular iconic and Pop Art renditions, from the geisha to anime manga.

He is also interested in the contrasts between old and new and the fusion of Eastern and Western culture. Hush's technique combines various street art approaches with traditional art practices.

Scenic Eclipse has set a new benchmark in luxury expedition ocean cruising suites with 114 luxurious suites across five decks, a sumptuous 550m2 spa sanctuary, up to 10 dining experiences, butler service to every suite, a staff to guest ratio of up 1:1, and our two on board helicopters and a submarine offering truly unique discovery experiences.

A Culinary Journey On Board Scenic Eclipse

11 October 2019

As Executive Chef on board Scenic Eclipse, Tom Goetter has set himself the challenge to reinvent dining on the high seas, and that means ensuring his guests can enjoy an ever-changing selection of flavours throughout their cruise. “We have a total of 2500 recipes across our eight restaurants,” Goetter says. “You would need to be on board for one and a half months to eat every dish.”

Dining on board Scenic Eclipse is a global culinary journey with 14 different nations represented in the kitchens and 10 unique dining experiences ranging from causal to fine dining and inspired by all corners of the globe. From contemporary French fine dining at Lumiere to your favourite fillet of steak cooked to perfection in the elegant Elements restaurant, a casual meal in the Azure Bar and Café, or modern Asian fusion at Koko’s, there is never a shortage of choice.

“We want to create a dining experience where guests feel like they cannot decide where to go at night time”, said Goetter. “What I don’t want is that one of our restaurants is called the main restaurant, or our best restaurant. It’s a discovery yacht, and we have created a discovery menu”. The attention and detail that has gone into the design and fit out of Scenic Eclipse is reflected in the passion for food coming from Tom and his team.

For the sushi bar, he doesn’t just airfreight in the freshest fish; his rice, his vinegar, his soy sauce all come direct from Japan. “You can get dashi vinegar and soy sauce anywhere, but they are different in Japan,” he says. “We have 24 month aged parmesan from Italy. It is outstanding. No one gets it because it’s 10 times the price but if you ever have pasta with this parmesan you don’t want anything else. We have two Italians in the kitchen and they just look at it all day long”.

On joining Scenic Eclipse, Goetter was given the mandate to create his own menus, to create all-inclusive dining experiences that would be like no other on any cruise ship. “We have lot of toys in the kitchen which I believe other cruise ship companies are not using yet”, he says. “We have dehydrators for dehydrating our own dry foods for breakfast and making our own spice mixes on board. We are using oven circulators for unique smoking methods and have an on board Urban Cultivator herb garden to ensure we have constant access to fresh herbs and greens.”

Scenic Eclipse offers a choice of all-inclusive dining experiences:

  • Elements - The main restaurant featuring Italian, steak and seafood
  • Yacht Club - Poolside grill, buffet and bar
  • Koko’s - Asian Fusion restaurant and Sake bar
  • Sushi @ Koko’s - A wonderfully authentic Japanese experience
  • Teppanyaki @ Koko’s - Private dining with an open Teppanyaki grill
  • Lumière - Contemporary French fine dining and Champagne bar
  • Azure Bar & Café - Relaxed all-day grazing
  • Epicure - Learn from the best in our dedicated cooking school
  • In-Suite Dining - A 24-hour comprehensive menu
  • Chef’s Table @ Elements - An exclusive invitation only degustation dining

To complement the dining experience Scenic Eclipse features eight spacious bars and lounges. Guests can sip a glass of France’s finest at the intimate Champagne Bar in Lumiere, indulge in an aged single malt at the elegant Lobby Lounge or unwind in the Observatory with a speciality tea or coffee. Complimentary beverages including mini-bar are part of our signature all-inclusive promise available all day, every day.

Australian Artist Brings Works of Rich Colour and Passion to Scenic Eclipse

28 August 2019

In a nod to its Australian heritage, Scenic Luxury Cruises and Tours has secured a series of original artworks from local Byron Bay artist, Mitch Gobel, to feature on board Scenic Eclipse, The World’s First Discovery Yachts™.

Best known for his work in abstract resin, Gobel started experimenting with resin, amongst other materials and his practice has evolved since into a wide variety of mixed media. Three original artworks were commissioned and a selection of 124 prints were selected for display in all of the ships suites. Scenic Eclipse currently owns the largest collection of Mitch’s work.

"Mitch’s work is a perfect complement to Scenic Eclipse”, said Karen Moroney, Project Director - Design, Scenic Group. “His works are truly beautiful. They reflect the colours and movement of the ocean and exhibit a passion for life and the environment, which is at the very essence of the design of Scenic Eclipse.

“It was very important to us to include something uniquely and expressly Australian on this ship. Mitch’s work is a true reflection of the incredible talent in this country, and we are incredibly proud to be able to feature his works”, said Mrs Moroney.

The three main piece commissioned for Scenic Eclipse are part of The Melt collection – Costeria Amalfitana, Raja Ampat, and The Antarctic Peninsula.

“The intention behind these works was to create a collection of art which illustrates a few specific oceanic environments of beauty and natural wealth,” said Mitch. “The artwork pays tribute to what we value from a positive perspective, as a reflection of our love, wonder and appreciation for the natural world.

“These pieces invite you to dive into my perception of three very unique environments which we know are vital to the health, diversity and abundance of life in our oceans. These areas deserve great recognition, and conservation should be at the forefront of our consciousness towards them.”

Scenic Eclipse Mitch Gobel Artwork

About the Artist

“The art is both a practice I know well and a surprising process, continually evolving and in every way unique — the fluidity of the material's present a constant challenge. I aim to create space for the art to be its own creation while simultaneously manipulating and controlling the outcome.

My experience of the art is what I consider to be a spiritual practice, and beyond egoic intervention, I endeavor to create from the heart. It's a reflection of my internal state, a cosmic vision or remembering which I'm doing my best to illustrate and understand. Incorporating a range of mixed media and pouring techniques, I reflect on the complexity of the world around me, inspired by nature, love and the evolution of self.'

Mitch has collaborated with Greenpeace, creating a special piece of resin art to represent their Save the Reef campaign. He also created a piece he called ‘Poseidon, Protector of the Sea’ for the marine conservation organisation Sea Shepherd and is an ambassador for the Goongerah Environment Centre (GECO), an organisation dedicated to protecting the ancient forests in Gippsland, Victoria from threats such as logging.

Q &A with Mitch Gobel

Why did you decide to work with resin as a medium and what are the challenges and rewards of using it?

I have been working with resin since 2012 and I was drawn to it initially mainly because of its beauty and depth but also because I didn’t understand it. I’d seen a hand full of resin works in galleries and those pieces were always the works that I couldn’t make sense of. That said, I felt there was potential to express something unique and defined as an artwork. The structure of resin is transparent, like glass, and it’s possible to support different pigments and materials within itself to create this kind of frozen, floating like feel. It is simultaneously free and contained and once I started to succeed in creating what I had in mind, with the resin, it became and still is really exciting. It is hard to work with. Resin is like honey before it sets and it requires a lot of space and a structured process to contain the flow as it hardens. The beauty of it is that it really is its own creation. I do my best to manipulate the outcome, but it goes where it needs to and I’m painting with it, rather than painting it.

Of all of the works on board Scenic Eclipse, is there one you’re most proud of? And why…

Some works are more impressive to me than others, some are better than others but it’s totally relative to the viewer. I try to stay neutral and not pick favourites because I consider each piece to be perfect within itself, but if I had to pick right now in this moment, I would say my favourite is probably Raja Ampat.

Raja, in particular is really special because I started with the intention to create a coral reef and meditated on how that felt and the colours. What came through as the art, I feel, is just so different to what I had in my mind, but then it works so well… It was a great example of how perfectly and effortlessly something beautiful can manifest when I get out of my way and let it unfold, rather than trying to control the outcome.

What synergies did you see between your work and Scenic Eclipse as an expedition ship exploring the most remote and stunning parts of the world?

The art has always been an exploration of self and a vessel into the unknown. A means to discover new places, new ideas… I’m sure many guests would feel the same or relate to those experiences through their journey with Scenic.

How do you know when your work is finished?

When my wife tells me to stop? No, sometimes it’s more apparent than others. Occasionally I miss the mark and put too much of ‘me’ into the piece, but I’m learning when to step back. There’s been piece’s which scream ‘enough!’ and others are harder to pick. Every piece is unique.

Scenic Eclipse surpasses expectations during sea trials

13 June 2019

Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours has today announced that Scenic Eclipse, the World’s First Discovery Yachts, continues to move closer to her official launch on August 15 2019, with the successful completion of extensive sea trials.

“It was a real pleasure to take Scenic Eclipse out to sea for the first time,” stated Captain James Griffiths, Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours. “Sea trials are a critical milestone in the construction process as it is the first time all the ship systems are operated together and is a key opportunity to confirm the theoretical information from the tank tests and computer modelling. The results from these trials surpassed every expectation.

“I have worked extensively with Azipods on other ships like Scenic Eclipse’s, and these sea trials confirmed to me how incredibly versatile and powerful they are, particularly when coupled with our oversized Bow Thrusters. I was also delighted with how quiet the ship is. She was vibration free and virtually silent during all our trials, exceeding our expectations in terms of stability, manoeuvrability and performance. Scenic Eclipse really does manage to combine small ship manoeuvrability with big ship levels of comfort and quietness; it’s quite remarkable to experience it”, he said.

With sea trials complete, Scenic Eclipse will now undergo the final touches to its interior and exterior and the final training of the onboard teams before the official launch and commencement of schedule of sailings.
