What to expect in India
We asked Scenic Groups Manager, Amanda Todd about her recent trip to India.
1. India can be a culture shock to many, what type of traveller would most enjoy a journey there?
An adventurous traveller with an open mind. India is such a colourful place, full of culture and contrast, so anyone interested in the amazing history, or keen photographers would also enjoy visiting.
2. What should guests pack?
Indians dress fairly conservatively and so it is recommended that guests cover their shoulders and knees. There is a lot of walking over uneven ground and through ruins, so good walking shoes are essential. A pair of slides or comfortable sandals that you can easily pop on and off are also handy and a hat or good sunscreen is a must as it gets very hot during the day.
3. The hotels Scenic guests stay in are extremely grand and are often old palaces, did you have a favourite and why?
Wow! I was blown away by the opulence and beauty of all of the hotels we stayed in. Scenic uses a lot of Taj and Oberoi hotels throughout Northern India, which are known for their incredible luxury. The hotels all provided 5 star facilities and excellent, personal service.
It’s a hard pick but my favourite was the Oberoi Amarvillas in Agra. I was lost for words when I walked into my room and saw the large balcony doors that opened up to an amazing view of the Taj Mahal. Incredible!
4. What was the food like?
As we travelled through the different areas, we experienced many different flavours and spices that were local to the region. Breakfast each morning is an all you-can-eat buffet style, so you have a good start to the day. Lunches and dinners are mostly Indian, with western options also available on some days.
I don’t like super spicy food but I really enjoyed the meals we had and found it to be exciting and varied.
5. Did India meet your expectations?
Definitely. Each day involved a jaw dropping and eye-opening experience, with so many wonderful sights. Our Tour Director and guide told us many incredible stories so we could understand the unique culture and history.
6. What did you love most about your time there?
India has always been a bucket-list destination for me and I loved the whole experience. From seeing the amazing Taj Mahal to dressing in a traditional sari and dancing with the locals, the whole tour was unforgettable. And there is still so much more to see. India, I will be back!
7. What was your wonder moment?
There were so many and every day involved a wonder moment. My favourite was enjoying delicious canapes and cocktails during our Scenic Sundowners in Agra, whilst overlooking the sunset over the beautiful Taj Mahal. You couldn’t wipe the smile from my face!
