Cruising Europe in Luxury with Scenic

Escape Travel consultant Tara Kane recently returned from a European River Cruise on board Scenic Opal. Here she shares her amazing journey.

Tell us about your recent holiday?

I travelled with Scenic on a luxury river cruise from Nuremberg to Budapest, travelling through Germany, Austria, and Hungary. From the moment I walked on board, I was warmly welcomed by all staff and felt at home. I sailed on Scenic Opal, which was only built in 2015. The ship was very luxurious and of a 5-star standard. My cabin had the most comfortable bed (and pillow menu), ample storage, large shower with mood lighting, and a beautiful balcony with sliding glass to control when the weather turned rainy or cold.

There were so many different areas on the ship to relax, including deck chairs up on the sundeck, couches in the lounge with full walls of windows to enjoy the scenery, and different table settings in the main restaurant.

Each day moved at a relaxed pace with enough time to enjoy the scenery from the ship and participate in one of the tours offered, while not rushing any meals (and no early starts!). There were stops at little towns with so much character. I loved exploring the cobblestone streets and shopping in local stores. We also visited cities where we had an in-depth tour of the main sights, plus free time to look at museums on our own.

I loved how all-inclusive Scenic is; I didn’t spend a cent the entire time! From the cappuccinos on my balcony in the morning (delivered by my butler) to 24/7 room service, Wi-Fi, the huge range of beverages available at anytime, and even tips, were all included. Moët Champagne at breakfast made for a very special start to the day!

What were the highlights or standout moments of your trip?

The staff! Everyone was so friendly and went out of their way to make you feel welcome and happy. We were greeted with smiles all hours of the day.

Do you have any packing tips for future guests?

Ensure you have comfortable shoes and clothes for exploring. Smart casual dress is all that’s required on the ship, so there’s no need to pack ball gowns or suits. Don’t forget your swimwear for the pool on the sundeck either. The ship provides extras such as hairdryers, L’Occitane amenities, umbrellas, walking sticks, bathrobes, and slippers.

What advice would you give to first-time cruisers?

A Scenic cruise is perfect for any type of traveller, from couples and friends to singles. As there are only around 160 guests on board, it’s like travelling with one big family.

Is there anything you would do differently next time?

Go for longer! I enjoyed every aspect of the cruise and could have easily continued on for another week. Each day was different, from the scenery and meals to entertainment and tours – there’s no reason to be bored! I am already planning my next river cruise, this time on a different river to other parts of Europe.
