Discover Scenic’s Myanmar with Ray Martin on Getaway


This luxury journey unveils a rich legacy where British colonial reminders nestle alongside golden pagodas and the future looks bright for some of the friendliest people on earth.

Tune in to Getaway over the next three weeks to witness Ray Martin’s luxury Scenic river cruise along Myanmar’s Irrawaddy River on board Scenic Aura from Mandalay to Yangon, exploring the heart of this beautiful country.

The Nine Network will be screening three full half hour episodes on Saturday 11, 18 and 25 March.

Starting in Mandalay, Myanmar’s second largest city and home to over 700 pagodas, here Ray marvels at Shwenandaw, a monastery covered internally in gold leaf plus an exclusive Scenic Enrich experience to learn how to produce gold leaf.

Followed by Kuthodaw Pagoda, home to the ‘World’s Largest Book’ and a walk through the rebuilt Mandalay Palace, destroyed during World War II. In Mingun, the un-cracked Mingun Bell and the all-white Hsinbyume Pagoda is admired. This episodes concludes with a special visit to a monastic supported school in Sagaing and exploring Inwa’s sights by horse and cart.

The following episode sees Ray sailing to Myinmu then traveling across the countryside exploring the sandstone grottoes; visiting Yandabo where the peace treaty ending the First Anglo-Burmese war was signed in 18926 now famous for its pottery and finally Bagan. The astounding temples in Bagan are visited including the most iconic sight of this hypnotic region, the impressive Ananda Temple.

The last instalment takes viewers to Salay, once a very important British seaport; Magwe’s, an old market town rarely visited by tourists as explored by trishaw; the quaint port town of Thayetmyo, home to the oldest golf course in Myanmar before arriving in Yangon. Ray shops at the city’s Bogyoke Aung San Market for handicrafts and crosses the Yangon River by ferry to Dhala village for a Scenic Freechoice activities. As the sun sets, Ray wanders around Shwedagon Pagoda followed by a Scenic Enrich experience – learning about the ritual of ‘oil lamp lighting’ then partaking in this local tradition.
