A moveable feast

A movable feast: Taste your way along Europe’s rivers with Scenic

Throughout our Europe river cruises we are committed to help you indulge in the gastronomy inspired by the regions travelled to immerse you in the culinary flavours of your destination. Our onshore included Scenic Freechoice activities will take your senses on a journey – from unusual local ingredients and cooking styles, to cooking demonstrations and tastings – a flavour adventure awaits!
Here are some of our favourites.

Flavours of Holland

Many of our European river cruises begin or end in Amsterdam, so there’s an opportunity for you to explore the streets and sample quintessential delicious Dutch treats. The most enthusiastic foodies may want to try herring the Dutch way – with the head and insides of removed, the fish is dipped in salt and then eaten by tipping back your head and downing the whole thing pelican-style. There are also many types of tasty cheeses and mouth-watering fluffy Poffertjes (pancakes) to try.

Gouda Cheese Markets

While taking in the Windmills, Tulips & Belgian Delights, you can choose to visit the Gouda cheese markets in the historic city of Gouda. Of course, the city is most famous for its namesake cheese which is enjoyed all over the world. History comes to life in the traditional cheese market that first started trading in 1395. Nowadays in the town square, the farmers and traders still sell their cheese through a deal-making process of back and forth negotiations heightened by each person clapping the other’s hand. It’s incredibly fun to watch.

Medieval Miltenberg

On our most popular itinerary Jewels of Europe, you have four food and beverage oriented Scenic Freechoice experiences to choose from in the medieval town of Miltenberg. If you enjoy a tipple, head to the local Schnapps producer where you will be able to taste the many flavours on offer.
There is also a choice to visit a local winery in the town of Wertheim to see the production process and of course, sample some of the offerings. If want to explore more traditional food from this region, you can meet a local farming family on their property and discover the local delicacies produced on site. We also arrange for you to meet a resident monk at Engelberg Monastery who brew their own beer complemented to handmade produce such as sausages and cheese.

Viennese Coffee Culture

Also, during the Jewels of Europe itinerary, you can learn about Vienna's coffee culture. An important part of their society for centuries, Vienna has elevated coffee creation to an art form. Café Central, where you will visit, was opened in 1876 and is the grandest of all Viennese coffee houses. The striking polished stone columns and high-vaulted ceilings hold the secrets of the scholarly crowd of Vienna including Sigmund Freud, Leon Trotsky, and Vladimir Lenin.

Altbier Tasting in Dusseldorf

When travelling in Germany, you should experience the incredible historic and passionate beer culture. During our Romantic Rhine & Moselle river cruise you can take a Scenic Freechoice excursion in Dusseldorf to the Old Town, where you can sample some Altbier, the traditional beer produced in this Lower Rhine region. The name derives from it being top-fermented, an older method than the bottom fermentation of other lager beers. Bottoms up!

Wine Tasting and Home-Hosted Lunch in the Douro Valley

There are dozens of delightful wineries (Quintas in Portuguese) in the Douro valley, with the Scenic Tour Director taking out all the guess work and showing you the best selections during your Portugal river cruise. Two such Quintas include Quinta Aveleda, a sparkling wine producer and Vila Nova de Gaia, one of the most famous cellars in Porto.

There is also delicious cuisine in Portugal including the tastes of the Côa Valley, during a visit to Casa Painova for a tasting of their almond, olive and fruit products. Enjoy a special Scenic Enrich excursion to the village of Provesende, a treasure perched high in the Douro Valley. Enjoy baking at a traditional bola at an authentic bakery and meet local families who will invite you to a home-hosted lunch complete with local port - it’s some of Portugal’s best.
